The final Spitfire versions, including the Mk.21, 22, and 24, sometimes referred to as the second-generation Spitfires, had corresponding navalized counterparts in the Seafire Mk.45, 46, and 47 versions. The Mk.47 Seafire, most similar to the Spitfire 24 type, had a considerably modified airframe. Essential modifications included a sting-shaped arresting hook at the tail and Y-type wings that could be folded, allowing for seamless operation aboard the Navy's latest carriers. The propeller was counter-rotating and featured six blades.
The South Marston production plant produced a total of 99 units of this last Seafire version, which were eventually assigned to No.800 Squadron on the HMS Triumph, No.804 Squadron on the HMS Ocean, and several FAA training squadrons or RNVR squadrons. Their post-war service was largely uneventful, and they were retired by the mid-1950s. The notable exception was the 800 Squadron Seafires, which were deployed against communist insurgents in Malaya in 1949 from the deck of the HMS Triumph. A year later, the same unit participated in the early stages of the Korean War, accumulating 245 offensive fighter missions and 155 ground attack sorties over the Korean Peninsula from 3 July to 20 September 1950.
