History:
The
British Army was the first to deploy the American 4x4 Jeep during the
North African Campaign in 1941. The Jeep quickly proved to be superior
to the light trucks previously used due to its power, lightweight
design, and small size, making it suitable for various roles.
- Airborne Operations: Non-essential equipment was removed to lighten the vehicle, enabling it to fit into medium-sized gliders.
- Reconnaissance Missions: The
Jeep was armed with a .303 Vickers K machine gun, capable of firing
1,200 rounds per minute, and equipped with a No.22 wireless set, the
standard radio for vehicles and tanks. These Jeeps were transported in
Airspeed AS.51 or AS.58 Horsa Gliders, each carrying one Jeep along with
its equipment, stores, and crew.
These Jeeps played crucial roles in key WWII operations, including:
- D-Day Landings (6 June 1944)
- Operation Market Garden (September 1944)
- Operation Plunder (March 1945)
Post-war,
many Jeeps were used in the Far East and Palestine for policing
operations. Gliders were phased out - after WWII, but the Jeeps
continued in service until the late 1950s.
