In 1913, Jules Goux won the Indianapolis 500 Grand Prix in a Peugeot. The engine of this car was a four-cylinder in-line engine designed by Ernest Henry. This design features the first use of two overhead camshafts and four valves per cycle, and was therefore very influential as a racing engine. To this day, it remains the structural standard for inline-four engines in race cars.
Birth of the inline 4-cylinder engine: In 1894, Maybach and Paul Daimler completed the development and design of the inline 4-cylinder engine with a cast cylinder block using the carburetor technology patented by Maybach in 1893. By the end of the 19th century, almost every good car in the world had this inline 4-cylinder engine by Maybach. This happened shortly after Maybach and Paul Daimler were forced out of the company.
