FGM-148 Javelin
History:
Developed and designed by Texas Instruments and Martin Marietta in 1989 as a successor to the widely used M-47 Dragon. This anti-tank missile uses tandem hollow-charge warheads, making it ideal for combating modern armour. The precursor charge defeats the explosive reactive armour (ERA), the main charge then penetrates the base armour of the vehicle.
With a range of 2.5 km (1.6 mi) and a total combat weight combining the missile and the Command Launch Unit of 18 kg (39.6 lb), it is one of the lightest of this new generation of weapons.
Its operational history began during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, this system destroying Iraqi Type 69 and T-72 tanks, was again used in the war in Afghanistan against enemy defensive positions, and some examples were also used in the Syrian Civil War.
Right now, this weapon is being used by Ukrainian troops in the 2022 War in Ukraine against Russian armoured formations.
