On 20 May 1941 German paratroopers landed on the island of Crete occupied by British troops. It was the start of the Operation Mercury, one of the most famous landing operations during World War II. In order to capture airfi elds and artillery batteries approximately 2,000 paratroopers landed in intervals of 15 minutes. Two out of three parachutes in every batch were containers with weapons and supplies.
