Although the MiG-29 first flew in 1977, Cold War tensions prevented the West from seeing it until a public appearance at Finland in July, 1986. Westerners were immediately impressed with the MiG-29's agility and maneuverability. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, many MiG-29s were assimilated into the Russian Air Force, and they have remained a favorite of pilots ever since.
